Mehron Melik founded Mehron Makeup in 1927 in New York City. 1927 was a pivotal year in the history of the Modern Era. When we think of the 1920's, the first thing that comes to mind is the roaring 20's, speakeasies, the jitterbug and flapper girls. With all the frolicking and fun that is portrayed as the 1920's it is easy to forget that the people of the 1920's in America defined the modern era. All segments of society blossomed in the 1920’s; it was the age of invention, innovation and mass production. It was the age of the birth of automobiles, and the birth of the urbanization of America and Canada. Within the arts it was the Age of Jazz, the Age of Expressionism and Surrealism, in Cinema it was the beginning of talking movies. It was a time of cultural, social, and economic innovation. Every facet of American life was being affected by the innovators and inventors of the 1920's. Innovation was everywhere, from the dance floor to literature, the Charleston and the Great Gatsby.
In 1927 in New York City, commercial transatlantic telephone service was inaugurated between New York and London, The Royale Theater opened at 242 W 45th, later to become the home of the CBS Radio Playhouse, The Ziegfeld Theater opened at 6th Ave and 54th St., The John Golden Theater opened, The Roxy Theater opened, The Majestic Theater opened, Lindbergh took off from New York to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The list of innovations in New York City in 1927 is amazing, the Holland Tunnel opened to automobiles and even in sports it was a time of achievement, a slugger named Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs that year.
Fashion was not to be left behind in this amazing decade, it was the decade when women did away with corsets and showed their legs in slinky dresses, and it was the decade that Makeup became an acceptable fashion accessory to the average woman. In New York City, a man living in a loft off of Broadway was breathing in these exciting changes and decided to become a part of them. Working at home in his loft Mehron Melik began formulating Makeup by hand to cater to the demands of the ever growing need for Makeup by the Performing Artists who were all around him.
Mehron Melik was an innovator of Performance Makeup, he made it by hand and personally sold it to the Performance Artists that inhabited the neighborhoods around Broadway. As he and his Makeup became better known throughout the Performance Community, the demand for his products grew. Not being able to visit all the live performance theaters that were opening in New York City on a daily basis personally, he began hiring women who would visit the Theaters and show the Performers how to apply the various Makeup products that he was producing at his loft off of Broadway. These instructive "sales women" became know throughout the theater district as the "Mehron Ladies" and performers waited anxiously for them to show up with the Makeup each night and help them apply it. Mehron's Theatrical Makeup became a mainstay of performers in theatre, vaudeville, burlesque, opera, ballet, and silent films, and the Makeup that they craved was made by Mehron.
Today Mehron Makeup is still an essential throughout the Performance Community from New York City to Hollywood, from Piccadilly Circus to Bollywood, performers throughout the world still crave the Makeup that Mehron innovated in 1927. Over Eighty Years Later Mehron is still producing quality theatrical makeup under the direction of Mehron Melik’s son, Martin, who continues to pursue the innovations begun by his Father, Mehron in 1927.
