USA Memorial Day

Memorial Day 2010
Memorial Day in 2010 falls on May 31, 2010. By an Act of Congress in 1968 Memorial Day has been designated as the last Monday in May, replacing the traditional Memorial Day of May 30. The history of Memorial Day dates back to the United States Civil War. Through many transformations, Memorial Day has evolved in the USA as a Day of Commemoration for those who served in the Military to protect and defend the ideals and principals of the United States and its allies around the world.

In recent decades Memorial Day has sadly lost it meaning to many Americans and it is seen as holiday to shop, barbecue and relax away from work for an extra day. In the midst of World War II, the Founder of Mehron Makeup, Mehron Melik found his own private, special way to commemorate Memorial Day by offering his services and his Makeup to the severely disabled and disfigured Servicemen who were returning home from the devastation of an horrific war. The Militarily Hospitals at Home, although Staffed with the best Medical Personnel were overwhelmed by the amount of men who they needed to service. Volunteers from all walks of life pitched in to lend a hand at the Military Hospitals throughout the USA.

The severity of battles and the force of the weapons that the US Servicemen were facing during World War II left many horribly disfigured, the dedicated Medical Personnel put their initial efforts into saving lives, and as many men were saved, there was now a need to acclimate them back into Civilian Life despite the disabilities and disfigurements that war had wreaked on them. Even as the physical damage of war was healed by Medical Professionals, the psychological damage was immense. Many Servicemen could not bear to be seen while being treated because of their disfigurements.

Beginning in 1927 Mehron Melik was creating Theatrical Makeup by hand and practicing the art that is now called, Makeup Artist. Upon learning of the distress that many Servicemen in Military Hospitals were undergoing because of their physical deformities, Mehron and his contemporaries such as Jack Dawn of Wizard of Oz Makeup Fame, volunteered their expertise in Makeup Application to the Servicemen in Veterans Hospitals who were suffering from self esteem issues while their physical deformities were being corrected by the Military Doctors.

During the time of World War II reconstructive surgery was a long and arduous process, often times required multiple surgeries over a prolonged period of time. Makeup Artists and Manufacturers such as Mehron Melik used their Makeup Skills and Makeup to teach the Servicemen how to use Makeup to cover up deformities while they were waiting for the reconstructive process to be completed. Their level of self esteem and willingness to have visitors increased as the Servicemen applied their Makeup and were able to hide the physical scars of war. Hiding the physical scars gave the Servicemen confidence that their deformities had robbed from them. Mehron Melik, Jack Dawn and others like them turned Memorial Day into an all year round event, as they visited Servicemen on almost a weekly basis to show them how Theatrical Makeup could help them rid themselves of the physiological damage of their physical wounds.

In 2010, the United States again finds its Veteran Medical System at the brink with Military Personnel returning home from two theaters of operation with horrific deformities from brutal battles. Medical Assistance for the wounds of war has progressed immensely from World War II till now, however, the same physiological damage and self esteem issues still exist because of the physical scarring of their wounds. If Mehron Melik was still here today, he most certainly would still be paying visits to wounded Veterans bringing them the innovations of Mehron Makeup, such as Airbrush Makeup and the newest Mehron Makeup Foundation for every skin tone, to ease their transition back to a civilian life and cosmetically correct the physical scars that war has left on them.

Every Makeup Artist posses the imagination and the gift of Makeup Artistry to make a difference in the lives of Servicemen returning home and looking forward to the day when their physical scars are vanished by modern medical technology. While they wait, the talented and gifted Makeup Artists throughout the Nation can lend their expertise in the art of Makeup Transformation to change someone's outlook if even for a day, just as the innovators of the Makeup Industry have done in the past.

Dennis Hopper 1936-2010

Dennis Hopper 1936-2010
Today, May 29, 2010 Hollywood lost one of its Stars. Dennis Hopper succumbed to cancer and left this earth. Mr. Hopper enjoyed a tumultuous acting career that spanned six decades. Although an Actor who played roles in iconic Hollywood films including, Rebel Without a Cause, and Giant, with James Dean, Dennis was tagged with the moniker of a difficult and stubborn person to work with, thus limiting his acting career for years at a time.

Dennis Hopper, a student at the prestigious Actors Studio, co-founded by Elia Kazan and later led by Lee Strasberg, was a passionate actor and later Director and Producer. Performing at a young age in the film that defined a generation, Rebel Without a Cause, Mr. Hopper later co-wrote, directed and starred in Easy Rider, the independent film that took Hollywood by storm in the 1960's and defined the post Rebel Without a Cause Generation. His Easy Rider success was soon overshadowed by his head strong personality that led Hollywood Casting Agents, Directors and Producers to believe that he did not posses a cooperative work ethic. In his later years Dennis Hopper credited John Wayne with saving his career. Ten years after Easy Rider in another iconic Hollywood Film, Apocalypse Now, that defined another segment of the baby boom Generation, Mr. Hopper's talents were again featured leading to a cascade of work as an Actor, Director and Producer.

Dennis Hopper's artistic pursuits included Television and Film Work along with a passion for Art and Photography. As an Actor who played roles in some of the most memorable American Films, Mr. Hopper became a fixture in its culture. Mehron Makeup has bore witness to not only the career of Dennis Hopper but also to his entire life, as Mr. Hopper was born nine years after the founding of Mehron Makeup. As a student of Character Acting in the Actors Studio located in New York City, Mr. Hopper would have certainly been a student of the physical transformation that Professional Performance Makeup added to an Actor's performance.

Through a troubled personal life that included decades of drug abuse and numerous failed marriages, Dennis Hopper always rose again to show his acting abilities in roles that will never be forgotten. It is with a heavy heart that Mehron Makeup recognizes the accomplishments of this career actor and bids him farewell.

Featured Artist from the Past

The Mehron Blog features runs regular feature postings on Makeup Artists who are making a name in the various fields of Makeup Artistry. On January 21, 2009, the Featured Makeup Artist was Mario Ceja, aka Mario Ink. Mario continues to refine his Makeup Skills and work in a variety of Makeup disciplines. The January 21, 2009 Mehron Blog was a short biography and recap of the work of this Chicago based Makeup Artist. Some pictures of his his recent work include:

From the Mehron Blog, January 21, 2009:
The Art of Mario Ink

The Art of Mario Ink - Model- AshleyChicago has become the focus of America's attention because of the election of Senator Obama to the office of the Presidency. The Windy City is in a whirlwind with the influx of the World's Media watching every move that the Presidential transition team is making in putting together the team that will lead the United States into the future. The streets of the Windy City are also in the midst of a cultural revolution in the Art of Makeup. One of the leaders in this cultural revival is Mario Ceja, a founding partner in Mario INK.

Mario began his career as an airbrush artist at Art Festivals painting clothing and caricatures. Born and raised in Chicago, Mario took a summer job at 6 Flags Great America in the Air Brush Booth. While sweating out commercial merchandise for Great America to hawk to their visitors, Mario knew he had an innate ability to use the air brush. As he sharpened his skills with the air brush his creativity began to burst through his soul and he sought other ways to express his artistic abilities maturing within him.

With ten years of air brushing experience Mario was discovering the fascinating world of Makeup and realized that painting bodies with Makeup would enable him more creative freedom than airbrushing clothing. Mario answered an Internet posting by Benjamin Moline, co-founder of Windy City Media, who was seeking airbrush artists to body paint models for a calendar. Producer Dan Baron, co-founder of Windy City Media, invited Mario and eleven other Artists to a Promotional Party where they would Body Paint Models Live, one for each month of the year. "Mario was the HIT of the party," Dan relates, “and from that day forward Mario and I became partners and created Mario INK. Together we created the demand for promotional body painting throughout Chicago." After the success of the calendar event Benjamin and Dan asked Mario if he was interested in being the art director for Windy City Media.

Windy City Media produces Glam Live, a fashion for awareness event promoting Breast Cancer awareness through an engaging evening of high fashion, extreme beauty and avant garde hairstyles. Glam Live is a collaboration of hairstylists, makeup artists, designers, photographers and body painters working together to present an evening of entertainment while highlighting the important cause of Breast Cancer Awareness for the Y-Me National Breast Cancer Awareness Organization.

The talents of Mario Ceja and the production acumen of the founders of Windy City Media were becoming well known throughout the Chicago area. Mario relates, "The concept that we had in mind was to create a team of trained air brush artists that would perform a variety of work with a style that would define Mario INK. With Dan as the Marketing Director we started to train a team that included, Scott, Leah, Joe and Leek just to name a few."

One of the biggest events in the World of Makeup is the Halloween and Party Expo which is attended by Award Winning Makeup Artists, Special Effects Artists and the Leaders in Makeup Production from around the world. "A couple of years ago I met Martin Melik, president of Mehron at a Halloween Show where they were exhibiting and featuring some Body Painters working with Mehron Paradise Makeup AQ. I was blown away by the colors of Paradise Makeup and by watching their featured artists applying it with brushes. After watching and talking to the Mehron Body Painters, I was determined to use brushes and Paradise Makeup to create new looks that I had in mind.", Mario explained, "I knew that I could combine the two, brushes and air brushes to create a totally different texture and look with Paradise Makeup, and after using it I was in love with Paradise Makeup."

Never staying in one place Mario and Dan have taken Mario INK even further by becoming the founders of Air Brush Academy, where classes are given in the art of Extreme Beauty Makeup and Air Brushing. Mario relates his vision, "With the advent of HD film Air Brush Makeup will become the standard for Makeup Artists in the Performance Industry. I want to be in the forefront of this next wave in Makeup, I hope to work much more with Mehron and their newest Makeup, Lux Air, which we are fortunate enough to have access to at the Air Brush Academy even though Mehron will not be introducing it till 2009".

Stephanie Ferreira, Marketing Director of Mehron thinks Mario INK exemplifies the artists that love Mehron, "We see Mario INK as the kind of innovative, cutting edge Makeup Artist that will use the high quality Makeup that we produce to create works of art. We are so proud to feature Mario INK on our Web Site as a Featured Artist and look forward to working with him on future projects and providing Air Brush Academy with the tools they need to teach the next generation of Makeup Artists."

Body Painting at The Makeup Show New York 2010

Attendees on the second day of The Makeup Show New York 2010 witnessed a second Body Painting creation by Jinny Houle using Mehron Paradise Makeup AQ, the water activated cake makeup that is preferred by Body Painting Makeup Artists for its true consistent color pigmentation. Paradise Makeup AQ is a co-creation of Mehron and Jinny Houle, renowned Face Painting and Body Painting Makeup Artist. Sindy Perez was the model for Jinny Houle's second body painting creation at The Makeup Show New York 2010, and after completion was photographed in Times Square by Richard Esposito.

Photographer Richard Esposito decided on Times Square as the back drop for the second day of photographing Model Sindy Perez as body painted with Mehron Paradise Makeup AQ by Jinny Houle for its activity and color contrast. In 1927 Times Square was a significant area of New York during the founding of Mehron Makeup. In 1927 when Mehron was creating his Makeup by hand in a loft off Broadway, Times Square was becoming the new Theater District for Manhattan. Massive Play Houses were being constructed around Times Square as Mehron Makeup was becoming the Professional Theatrical Makeup of choice by the ever growing Theater Industry. Over eight decades later Times Square has changed but Mehron Makeup is still the true color, consistent Professional Theatrical Makeup that Performers on Broadway crave. Mehron has changed along with Times Square, not in quality, consistency or durability but in the diversity of Makeup Products that are now offered throughout their extensive lines of Body Painting Makeup, Face Painting Makeup, Clown Makeup, Beauty Makeup, Character Makeup, Fashion Makeup, FX Makeup, Extreme Beauty Makeup, Fantasy Makeup and the expanded line of Professional Theatrical Makeup.

In 1927, Mehron Melik might not ever have thought of his Makeup being on display in the midst of a busting Times Square and might have been amazed at how Mehron Makeup has grown in its diversity. In tribute to the Founder and the history of Mehron Makeup, the Mehron Blog presents the photographs of Sindy Perez in Mehron Makeup as applied by Jinny Houle and captured by the camera of Richard Esposito in the heart of Manhattan, the streets that Mehron walked as he introduced his Makeup to the world of Professional Performers.
