The 2009 Emmy Award Nominees for Makeup

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences today, July 16, 2009 announced the nominees for Makeup Artists along with all the nominees in the field of broadcast. The Academy recognizes the various specialities in the filed of Makeup Artistry and considers each of these disciplines worthy of a separate category. Within each category all of the Makeup Artists are given accolades by the Academy, so that each nomination contains the Makeup Department Head along with each of the individual Makeup Artists who work together to accomplish a unified look in each particular production.

In the Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup For A Series, Miniseries, Movie Or A Special category the nominees include six Productions with each production producing 4-6 nominees for the prestigious Emmy award. The Academy also includes the categories, Outstanding Makeup For A Single-Camera Series (Non-Prosthetic) , Outstanding Makeup For A Multi-Camera Series Or Special (Non-Prosthetic) , and Outstanding Makeup For A Miniseries Or A Movie (Non-Prosthetic) . By not combining all of these Makeup Artists into a single category the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is singling out each makeup discipline as a field unto itself, thus making the award that much more coveted.

As the Art of Professional Performance Makeup for Studio and Stage gains evermore recognition from the Professional in the Television Industry, the general public is more willing to recognizesthat Makeup Artists posses an indispensable talent that enhances the verisimilitude of the Productions and deserves to be recognized in the same manner as the writer, actor, director and producer.

As the complexity of the art of makeup has grown so too have the amount of nominees and categories. The categories will have to be expanded as more disciplines are added to the field of Makeup. The Airbrush Makeup Artists is becoming an fixture on the sets of productions because of the move to high definition video and film. Airbrush Makeup is essential to the high definition productions because the detailing that comes through is vital on high definition. As this field continues to grow and more makeup Artist become specialist in the Art of Airbrush Makeup, the Academy will undoubtedly add more categories to the Emmy Awards to acknowledge the artistry accomplished by these Artists.
