Mehron Makeup Innovations in Beauty

1963 Patent Application Drawing by Mehron Melik
Mehron Makeup has been innovating Makeup since 1927 when Mehron Melik first began hand making his Theatrical Makeup for the Professional Performers who lived in his neighborhood off Broadway in New York City, NY. In 1927 the use of Theatrical Makeup was in its infancy, Makeup Artists were non-existent and the Film Industry was a fledgling idea that was struggling to get off the ground. Those who were using Makeup were making it from a hodgepodge of ingredients that included fat, grease, dyes and whatever would stick. Mehron Melik was observing the performers around him trying to create the Makeup they needed for their performances and with a precision mind began hand making Makeup with quality ingredients that he selected.

Turning his loft off Broadway into a laboratory, Mehron was soon creating a safe, effective makeup on a daily basis for his neighbors. His experiments soon became a full time endeavor and over time the leading Theatrical Makeup Company in New York City. Mehron, like other Makeup innovators of his time was soon custom producing makeup for specific Broadway Characters on demand, and like his contemporary on the West Coast, Jack Dawn of Wizard of Oz Makeup Fame, he became an expert on the application of Makeup. Along with custom made Makeup, Mehron was building a staple product line that included White Face Makeup for Clowns and Mimes.

As the decades marched on, the Mehron Makeup line grew by the hundreds. Each and every year Mehron introduced new makeup, applicators and accessories and expanded from a theatrical specialty makeup company to a makeup company that specialized in the finest products across all makeup lines. As an innovator, Mehron was unquenchable, whatever was needed he set his mind to producing, we can see this in US Patent Application 3,315,689 filed on November 15, 1963 and granted on April 25, 1967 to M. Melik.

In the Showgirl Era and Night Club Era, false eye lashes became in vogue again. The precision and detail of Mehron Melik can be seen in his patent applications for false eyelashes. Not only did he apply for a patent for the specific glue that he developed for false eye lashes, but application number 3,315,689 is a Patent Application for a "Device for Retaining Artificial Eyelashes in Proper Normal Shape". Mehron was meticulous in his Makeup Production and wanted to insure that even the False Eyelashes that were produced by the Mehron Company were protected. The diagram above was submitted with his Patent Application, there is no mistakenly the detail oriented man that Mehron was by viewing this application. The descriptive narrative that accompanies the Patent Application cites his reason for seeking the patent, "Therefore, it is an object of this invention to provide a holder for packaging and displaying artificial eyelashes which is relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and will protect the packaged lashes from damage and loss".

The concern for his product and its useful life that Mehron Melik shows in this Patent Application 3,315,689 is only an example of the precision that has guided Mehron Makeup throughout its over eight decades of existence in the manufacture of Makeup, Makeup Applicators and Accessories that continues through today. Mehron continues to perfect and refine Makeup, its applicators and its accessories with innovative introductions right through the present day. 2010 and beyond will continue to see Mehron Makeup in the forefront of Makeup Innovation.
